El virus respiratorio sincicial / Imagen de la Fundación Nacional para las Enfermedades Infecciosas, de EE. UU.

¿Por qué virus SINCICIAL y no SINCITIAL? La palabra surgió en inglés como syncytial formada mediante el prefijo griego σύν (syn) ‘juntos’, com en "sincronía", y κύτος (kytos), 'caja', luego ‘célula’, más el sufijo inglés -al usado para formar adjetivos a partir de nombres, igual que en nuestra lengua.

La voz griega kytos, fue tomada en el siglo XIX por el latín científico bajo la forma cytos, como en citología, citoplasma, etc.

En algunos trabajos médicos en español, así como en la prensa, se usa la grafía sincitial, un calco del inglés que no se corresponde con la morfología castellana. Las palabras inglesas terminadas en -tial cambian en español a -cial, como vemos en "partial", "initial", "spatial", "confidencial", etc. Una excepción es celestial, por influjo de la "s" que precede a la "t".
