Tercer día de la semana, ubicado entre el martes y el jueves, según el calendario gregoriano, en el cual la semana comienza el lunes. Sin embargo, en otras culturas ajenas a la tradición judeocristiana, para las cuales el primer día es el domingo, el miércoles sería el cuarto día de la semana.

Para los romanos, era la jornada consagrada a Mercurio, por lo que lo llamaban dies Mĕrcŭrī. La palabra ingresó al castellano en el siglo XII, según unos anales toledanos citados por Gregorio Mayans:

Muriò el Rei Don Alfonso el que tomò a Toledo de Moros dia de Mercores, el postrimer dia de Junio, Era MCXLVIII.

La grafía actual está atestiguada desde el siglo siguiente, en cartas y documentos de autor desconocido, y en el Setenario (1252-1270) del rey Alfonso el Sabio.

En francés, adoptó la forma mercredi;  mércores en gallego; mercoledi en italiano y dimecres en catalán.

¿Es correcto decir tramitología?

Sí, es un término usual en algunos países de América, como en Costa Rica y en Colombia. Se emplea con el doble significado de ‘conjunto de normativas relacionadas con los trámites que deben hacerse para llevar a cabo una gestión administrativa o de otro tipo’ y, en sentido despectivo y en el lenguaje popular, ‘empleo exagerado de trámites para realizar una gestión administrativa o de otro tipo’ (Diccionario de americanismos, Asale, 2010).
