    Tengo leído que en la España medieval se llamaba “maullatus” a la clase social mestiza descendiente de esclavos libertos (del mozárabe, y a su vez del árabe “mawlá” que viene a significar lo mismo). Vamos, que antes de Quevedo y Garcillaso ya existían unos mulatos llamados en mozárabe "maullatus". ¿Posible origen de la palabra mulato?

    Diversos etimólogos, como Corominas y Dozy, rechazan la etimología árabe y sostienen que mulato proviene de mulo, el animal engendrado por cruza del asno (Equus africanus asinus) con el caballo (Equus ferus caballus), este del latín mulus.
