Se qué la conjunción aunque es correcta. Lo que deseo saber es si antes se consideraba preferible decir aun cuando.

No, no es el caso.La conjunción concesiva aunque está registrada en los diccionarios académicos desde 1726, mientras que la locución conjuntiva aun cuando aparece registrada por primera vez en 1869. El uso de aun cuando desde su aparición ha sido siempre abrumadoramente menor que el de aunque.
