¿No está aprobada la palabra por la Academia?

Si se refiere a su registro en el Diccionario, por el momento solo se recoge la forma en dos palabras: arco iris. Sin embargo, el Diccionario panhispánico de dudas dice: «Aunque aún es mayoritaria la grafía arco iris (pl. arcos iris), es preferible la forma simple arcoíris, pues el primer elemento de este tipo de compuestos suele hacerse átono, dando lugar a que las dos palabras se pronuncien como una sola. Es invariable en plural: los arcoíris. Note que se debe escribir con tilde.
