Época geológica que corresponde a la parte más reciente del período Cuaternario, iniciado hace unos 2,59 millones de años, según propone una parte de la comunidad científica, debido al fuerte impacto de la actividad humana sobre los ecosistemas del planeta.

Los científicos que concuerdan con esta denominación, se dividen entre los que sitúan su comienzo hace unos 15.000 años, con la eliminación de una parte de la fauna por obra de los cazadores-recolectores. Otros, como sostenía el Premio Nobel de Química de 1995, el neerlandés Paul Crutzen, que fue quien acuñó el vocablo, lo sitúan en la Revolución Industrial, hacia fines del siglo XVIII.

La palabra fue creada por composición a partir del griego άνθρωπος (anthropos) ‘ser humano’, y καινός (kainos) ‘nuevo’.
