Mamífero de la familia de los suidos, registrado en la nomenclatura binaria como Sus scrofa que, originario de Europa y Asia, está hoy presente en los cinco continentes.

Es un animal gregario, aunque se le considera muy dañino debido a su hábito de hozar el suelo, con lo que lo arrasa y desnutre. Se nuclea en grupos matriarcales de entre tres y hasta veinte animales. La hembra es llamada en castellano jabalina y la cría, jabato.

Su nombre procede del árabe ḫinzir gabalī, formada por ḫinzir ‘cerdo’ y gabalī ‘montañés’ 'montañés'.

Al hablar de la primer clase de un curso que, por ejemplo sería gratuita, se dice: «primera clase sin cargo» o «primer clase sin cargo».

El adjetivo primero no se apocopa delante de un sustantivo femenino. Por tanto, se dirá: primera clase.
