Consulta: 

¿Debo usar «iniciar» o «dar inicio»?
He leído en la prensa: «Se dio inicio al acto conmemorativo». ¿Se debió decir: «Inició el acto conmemorativo»?

Respuesta: 
El verbo iniciar es un verbo transitivo, esto significa que en la oración debe haber un ente (sujeto) que inicie algo. Así, se dirá: El alcalde inició el acto conmemorativo. Las autoridades iniciaron el acto conmemorativo. Fíjese que decir *Inició el acto conmemorativo es un enunciado inadecuado: falta expresar el sujeto que inicia el acto.
 
Sin embargo, sí es adecuado emplear el verbo iniciar en su forma pasiva, ya que en este caso se puede omitir el agente (el ente que inicia algo): Fue iniciado el acto conmemorativo; Se inició el acto conmemorativo. Así como también son apropiadas las construcciones dar inicio a algo o dar principio a algo, empleadas generalmente en forma pasiva: Se dio inicio/principio al acto conmemorativo.
 
No obstante lo anterior, existe una tendencia actual, a nuestro juicio inapropiada, a emplear iniciar como verbo intransitivo, de manera que la propia cosa que se inicia funciona como sujeto: *Inició el acto conmemorativo.
