Respuesta: 

En cuanto a la elección del verbo, tal vez sea más adecuado encender, pero iluminar no se puede considerar incorrecto. El principal error es de concordancia verbal.La puerta no se abre cuando la luz roja se ilumina. (En general: los dos tiempos en presente de indicativo).La puerta no se abrirá cuando la luz roja se ilumine. (Dado el caso: futuro de indicativo-presente de subjuntivo).
