Consulta: 

Concepto y uso de la aposición en castellano. ¿Ha variado tanto desde que aprendimos que significaba lo mismo que el sustantivo, que podría intercambiarse o incluso suprimirse uno de los términos? Ej. San Martín, el Libertador de América...Consultando las definiciones de la RAE encuentro que la primera hace hincapié en la figura tonal, mientras que la segunda no.

Respuesta: 

Note que la primera acepción registrada en el DRAE (dentro de la que se inscribe su ejemplo) se refiere a la aposición explicativa. La segunda acepción define la aposición especificativa: «Construcción de dos elementos nominales unidos, el segundo de los cuales especifica al primero»; por ejemplo: célula madre, hombre rana.
