Prometer algo es comprometerse a cumplir algo a futuro (al menos es lo que a mí me enseñaron), entonces, ¿es correcto usar prometer para un hecho pasado?. Es muy frecuente escuchar Te prometo que no lo hice; De veras, te lo prometo, ya pagué la mensualidad.

Respuesta: 

Considerando la acepción 'asegurar la certeza de lo que se dice' es adecuado usarlo para asegurar la certeza de un hecho del pasado. Te prometo que no lo hice = te aseguro que no lo hice.
