Quería saber si para abreviar cualquier palabra siempre se utiliza la primera letra y la última sílaba de la palabra.

Respuesta: 

La primera letra sí, pero la última sílaba no siempre.Note que la abreviatura de véase es v.; que la abreviatura de página es p. o pág., para citar dos ejemplos. La abreviatura debe ser representativa de la palabra desarrollada, y en su formación se deben eliminar como mínimo dos letras de la palabra plena; la abreviación se puede hacer truncando la palabra original (pág., art., prof., etc.) o eliminando alguna de sus letras intermedias (Dña., avda., Sr., etc.).
