Desde siempre tuve simpatía por esta palabra. Una vez leí, u oí, una versión sobre su origen: era costumbre entre los italianos, cuando salían los domingos a divertirse, llevar un clavel (garofano, en italiano) en el ojal. La frase «Me ne vado di garofano» pasó a ser sinónimo de «irse de farra», y en el Río de la Plata la traducción de ella deformó «garofano» en «garufa».

Respuesta: 

egún el Novísimo diccionario lunfardo, de José Gobello y Marcelo Oliveri, es palabra de origen incierto.
