Consulta: 

Una persona preguntó sobre la palabra leer, si contenía hiato o diptongo. Ustedes le contestaron que siempre que hay dos vocales iguales, eso constituye un hiato. ¿Si son dos vocales débiles, es un hiato? En el caso de chihíta, ¿hay hiato o hay diptongo? No recuerdo ninguna con dos ies átonas juntas, ni dos úes átonas juntas, pero la respuesta no me pareció convincente.

Respuesta: 

Lamentamos que la respuesta no le haya parecido convincente, pero la normativa establece que dos vocales iguales se consideran siempre hiatos (v. Ortografía de la lengua española, 2010). Por eso, en el caso de chiita (note que no lleva hache), hay hiato. No lleva tilde porque es palabra grave o llana terminada en vocal. Otros ejemplos: duunviro, duunvirato.
