En la construcción «llamar a alguien por teléfono», el verbo llamar funciona como transitivo, por lo que «a alguien» es el complemento directo, y «lo» (a él) y «la» (a ella) los correspondientes pronombres átonos de tercera persona singular de c. d. Así en sus ejemplos corresponde: «Llamarlo por teléfono» (a Pedro). «Llamarla por teléfono» (a Luisa). En zonas leístas se usa y es admisible «le» por «lo»: «Llamarle por teléfono» (a Pedro).
