No debe darle vergüenza preguntar: es la mejor forma de aprender. Tenemos que aclararle que no es una letra: es un signo. En realidad proviene de la abreviatura latina de et, que significa 'y'; la e y la t combinadas en un dibujo dieron este signo, que significa lo mismo que significaba. Hay gente que lo llama por su nombre inglés «ampersand», que proviene de 'and per se and', pero en español se llama «et».
