La palabra deriva del latín hybrida, sustantivo masculino de la primera declinación que significa 'animal nacido del cruce entre puerca y jabalí' o 'persona nacida de padres de condición o etnia distinta'. El origen de la palabra latina es desconocido, pero se parece al griego hýbris, que significa 'descaro', 'exceso', 'orgullo', 'insolencia', 'impetuosidad'.El significado científico de la palabra castellana depende del ramo de la ciencia en que se use.
