Es correcto abreviar Estados Unidos como EEUU, o se escribe EU?

Se abrevia EE. UU. , dejando espacio tras el punto, donde la duplicación de las dos letras quiere decir que van en plural (Estados y no Estado, Unidos y no Unido).También aparece como USA, que no es abreviatura, sino sigla (de ahí que no lleve puntos): United States of America.
