Crueldad es el tema cuando se prohíben lenguas "oscuras”

Las prohibiciones de libros en las prisiones son siempre, literalmente, crueles e inútiles (para el caso, también lo son las prisiones), pero esta es especialmente mala: El programa matinal de la National Public Radio informó de que en el último año, Michigan ha prohibido los diccionarios en español y en swahili.

Según el portavoz del Departamento Correccional de Michigan, "si todos los presos decidieran aprender un idioma muy oscuro (como parece ser el caso del español), podrían entonces hablar libremente delante del personal y de otros sobre la introducción de contrabando o la agresión al personal o a otro preso". El año pasado, el 13% de la población estadounidense hablaba español como primera lengua.

Además de los diccionarios, Michigan también ha prohibido cualquier libro en los dos idiomas para los que el personal de la prisión no pueda encontrar una traducción.

Obviamente, esta política tiene serias ramificaciones en la calidad de vida de las personas encarceladas que leen principalmente en cualquiera de los dos idiomas, pero también tiene un impacto en su capacidad para navegar por el proceso legal en su propio nombre.

Como siempre, parece que la crueldad es el tema.
