Consulta: 

Quisiera saber cuándo se usa checar o si es incorrecta pues yo siempre digo chequear.

Respuesta: 

Chequear es de uso general en la mayor parte del mundo hispanohablante por 'examinar', 'revisar'. Checar es sinónimo de chequear, pero su uso se restringe básicamente a México, donde es perfectamente válido.
