Tras leer las entradas correspondientes a los dos términos tanto en el diccionario online de la RAE, el Diccionario CLAVE y el Diccioanario María Moliner, no me queda claro aún cómo se diferencia el uso de ambos términos en frases como «No me es simpático; ello no obsta para que lo reciba cortésmente» (ejemplo tomado del Diccionario María Moliner), yo hubiera dicho: «No me es simpático; eso no obsta que...»; o en contrucciones como «por ello/eso»: «Fue por ello/eso que él no vino». ¿Me podrían indicar de manera más o menos sencilla cómo diferenciar los usos o si es que se pueden utilizar de manera indistinta?

Respuesta: 

Son equivalentes en la mayor parte de los casos, pero en el español actual, se prefiere el uso de eso. Ello queda reservado al lenguaje escrito y, ciertamente, adquiere cierto aire pretencioso.
