Quisiera saber por qué en la unión de la O y la A en ambas palabras no se les pone la H intercalada a las dos palabras.

Respuesta: 

La ortografía de la lengua no exige colocar una 'h' entre ciertas combinaciones vocálicas de palabras similares, su presencia se debe normalmente a razones etimológicas, como el caso de su consulta: toalla proviene de la antigua grafía tobaja, y esta del germánico thwahljô, mientras que almohada proviene del árabe hispánico almuhádda, y este del árabe clásico mihaddah.
