¿Por qué se escribe y en las siguientes frases? Aluminio y hierro. Nieve y hielo. Y sin embargo, ¿por qué se escribe: geografía e historia?

Respuesta: 

Porque la y toma la forma e ante palabras que empiezan por el sonido /i/ (Compra aguja e hilo), excepto cuando al sonido /i/ le sigue una vocal con la que forma diptongo (aluminio y hierro).
