Macarrones con salsa de tomate

Pasta alimenticia de origen italiano confeccionada a base de harina de trigo y, a veces, huevo, que tiene la forma de un cilindro muy alargado o tubo. En italiano es palabra muy antigua, documentada por lo menos desde el siglo XIV aunque, según algunos estudiosos1, eran conocidos por lo menos desde el siglo XII, en el reino de Sicilia, más precisamente, en la ciudad de Trabia.

Por extensión de significado, también se llama macarrón el tubo de plástico flexible que se usa para recubrir cables eléctricos o conducir fluidos.

La palabra proviene del italiano maccherone y maccarone, provenientes a su vez del bajo griego μακαρία (makaría), que era una pasta de harina hecha con cebada y caldo, según el Dizionario etimológico online  de Tomasseo e Bellini. Según el Diccionario de la lengua española (RAE), proviene del italiano dialectal maccarone, y este del griego bizantino  μακαρώνεια (makaroneia) ‘felicidad para siempre‘, frase que se decía en las comidas funerarias.
