LA PALABRA DEL DÍA

Se encuentran en la mayor parte del mundo, excepto en las zonas muy frías, pero las especies más vistosas crecen en la zona tropical

orquídea

Flor de una planta orquidiácea cuyas especies tropicales son muy apreciadas en floricultura. La familia de las orquidáceas comprende entre 25 000 y 30 000 especies, a las que deben sumarse 60 000 variedades híbridas  producidas por floricultores.

La forma tuberosa de las raíces de la orquídea, semejantes a testículos humanos, ha hecho que desde muy antiguo se le atribuyeran propiedades afrodisíacas. Algunos preparan un té con las raíces de la orquídea para estimular el deseo sexual, y otros huelen la fragancia de la flor con el mismo fin.

Orquídea proviene del latín científico orchis y este, del griego ὄρχις (orkis) ‘testículos’, palabra que también está en el origen de orquitis ‘inflamación de los testículos’.

■ En el Cancionero de Baena, aparece también la grafía fortytudo.
