Consulta: 

¿Es correcta la expresión «dar BUENA cuenta de una noticia» con el significado de «dar amplia o detallada información de una noticia»? Es algo que escucho con una relativa frecuencia. Leyendo una novela me encontré también esta frase: «...cuando Dios se lo lleve a la otra vida, tendrá que dar BUENA cuenta ante Él de todos y cada uno de sus actos criminales».
Por otro lado, en La familia de Pascual Duarte, del escritor Camilo José Cela, se puede leer: «Al empezar a escribir esta especie de memorias me daba BUENA cuenta de que algo habría en mi vida -mi muerte, que Dios quiera abreviar- que en modo alguno podría yo contar...». Aunque quizás este último ejemplo no sea del todo apropiado.

Respuesta: 
En efecto, dar cuenta de algo denota también ‘informar a alguien sobre algo’; así, dar buena cuenta de una noticia adquiere exactamente el significado que usted indica.
En el ejemplo de Camilo José Cela, se trata de la forma pronominal darse cuenta de algo ‘percatarse, notar o advertir algo’.
