Palabra sobre la que consulta:

Consulta: 

A los pobladores de Puerto Rico, se les llama puertorriqueños. Pero a los habitantes de Costa Rica se les llama costaricenses. ¿Por qué no se llaman «puertoricenses» o «costariqueños»?

Respuesta: 
Porque ambos sufijos son adecuados para formar gentilicios; no hay reglas fijas para construir el adjetivo que denota el origen de las personas, se adapta a los usos de cada región.
Note que el gentilicio costarricense debe escibirse con doble r  por estar en posición intervocálica.
