Origen o etimologia palabra verdugo

Verdugo es el funcionario que ejecuta la pena de muerte o que tortura a los prisioneros: una práctica primitiva y repugnante que todavía se verifica en algunos países.Del latín virere (ser verde, verdear) se deriva viridis (verde, fresco), y de éste, bajo la forma abreviada vir-, transformada en ver-, más ductum (tomado, agarrado, adquirido) se formó la palabra verdugo, que a comienzos del siglo XIII, significaba ‘vástago, rama que se corta verde’.Con el tiempo, la palabra adquirió el significado más específico de ‘vara de mimbre usada para azotar’, y ya en el siglo xvi, por un proceso llamado metonimia, designaba no sólo la vara usada para el castigo sino también al que la usaba: ‘el que ejecuta el tormento o la pena de muerte’. Mas tarde, también se conoció por verdugo la capucha con el que el ejecutor ocultaba su rostro, y por generalización, cualquier tipo de pasamontañas.
